Hamilton Ross Coral Gold Men's Wristwatch Roman Numeral Dial Very Rare Mint
Few of these watches still exist and they are highly collectible. During the 1930's and 1940's Hamilton made the finest hand wound watches ever produced. For a brief period before the outbreak of World War II, the company offered limited editions of a few of its most popular gold watches in a "Coral" finish with less than 6500 units of each model produced. These American watches with noble metals and high quality movements became the most collectible. On occasion we find gems like the one offered here. As you can tell by the photographs, the previous owner rarely wore the watch. We estimate about 65 of these units in this condition still exist. Hamilton called this model the Ross. It has curved lugs, not hinged and movable ones. This watch has a sunburst face with enamel painted gold Roman numerals and gold hands. Hamilton originally featured this one in its 1940-41 catalogs.
Few of these models exist. Very few with the sunburst Roman numeral configuration and fewer still in excellent to mint condition. Wadsworth manufactured and helped design the Ross case in collaboration with the companys internal staff and the independent design firm of DiVincenzo & Arienti of New York.
As part of the late 1930s collection, the Ross appealed to moderately affluent buyers during the depression. Hamiltons use of the Elinvar alloy made their movements technically superior to both domestic and international competitors. The alloy allows the watch to keep accurate time regardless of fluctuations in temperature and, or altitude. In addition, Hamilton equipped the 982 with materials that allowed watchmakers to tune them to chronometer status. We look for estate pieces with little to no case wear.
