Lot of 12 Trinitite thumbnail specimens, very rare! Trinity site, Soccoro Co. NM
Lot of 12 Trinitite thumbnail specimens, very rare! Trinitite is fused sand that was created beneath the first atomic bomb test at the Trinity Site, Socorro County, New Mexico, USA at 5:29:45am on the 16. These specimens were part of the inventory of a Santa Fe, New Mexico rock shop that closed in the1960s. I bought a garage full of rocks, the remaining inventory, in about 1986, and mounted these specimens in these clear, sharp-edged thumbnail cases with labels, shortly after.
Reportedly, they have very little radioactivity above normal background levels. The position of the specimens (relative to each other in the photos) is the same for all photos.
The top row has weights from 0.5gm to 0.8gm, (from left to right) and the front row weighs from 0.8gm to 1.0gm. All pieces had some surface exposure, that is, there are no pieces that have broken off from the bottom of some larger piece. The luster varies from completely matted to glassy, most being waxy or greasy, and the body of the specimens show many voids and variations in color.
