Here we have a wonderful American yellow ware baker that is visually appealing in the simplicity of its design. The underside has 10 feet used to raise the bottom of the baker off the super-heated surface of a cast iron oven or stove. To form the feet, the potter cleverly rolled out 10 small balls of clay and pressed them onto the bottom forming the feet while the clay was still soft and workable. This baker is very well molded with none of the flaws often found on early yellow ware. Measuring 12 ¾" long by 10 ¼" wide and 3 ½ high, the baker is in near mint condition. Bakers got heavy use and typically show chips, cracks and other damage. This baker has only mild glaze wear on the feet from years of use.
Many of these bakers, especially larger ones, are "warped, " not this one, it sits flat. Bakers in this condition are difficult to find and are highly sought after.
