Here we have an absolutely stunning and very finely molded game dish. Dating to the mid-1800s, this is an extremely rare yellow ware form. The visual appearance of this game dish is striking with its highly detailed molding.

The lid is finely detailed with 3 chicks hatching and emerging from their shells. The base has a finely molded and detailed basket weave design. The outside of the underplate is detailed with woven wheat sheaves.

The visual appearance of this game dish is striking with its detailed molding. This yellow ware form is referred to as cane with the surface not being glazed.

This allows for the great molded detail that would not be as prominent if the surface was glazed. The game dish base measures 7 ¼" in width and 6" high to the top of the chick's head. The under plate measures 8 ½ wide. The underside of the basket and plate are both impressed "WS&S". This was a mark used by Wilhelm Schiller & Son who made highly detailed and sought after pottery during the mid-1800s. The lid, base and under plate are all in mint condition with no damage or repairs. This is one of several related game dishes featuring chicks and hens. This is an extremely rare and spectacular piece of early yellow ware to be cherished by the advanced collector.
